South East Market: Neighborhood Focused, Equitable Lens, Women Owned

South East Market is reinventing the neighborhood market.

I recently had the privilege of photographing the women behind South East Market. The market has found its home in the 49507 zip code here in Grand Rapids. Co-Founders Alita and Khara are focused on creating a space full of healthy and affordable food that serves the surrounding neighborhood. Access to quality food is a rampant issue within certain communities, and their approach is to ensure the area is served well while embracing the richness of who they are.

“The 49507 zip code is one of the most diverse spaces in Grand Rapids, MI. We know that our diversity is our strength. It means colorful stories, rich culture, delicious food, and beautiful people…and is the future of humanity.”

Alita and Khara’s local focus spreads to other systemic issues including access, food justice, environmental sustainability, affordability which often disproportionately affect BIPOC. It was an honor to chat with them, hear a bit more about their business, and see the hearts that started the market, in action.

Not only are Alita and Khara both lovely people, what they’re doing through South East Market is beautiful. Follow along with their journey on their website or Instagram.

Sincerely,
Ashley
