Happy Birthday Star Wars Style
Happy Birthday Mr. Handsome
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, Doug’s Aunt showed him the Star Wars movies. He loves them to this day and I think that most of it is rooted in the sentimental memories of watching them with her. While we were dating, he showed all of them to me and patiently explained you know, everything because that is just not how my brain works.
When it came to his birthday, I knew that at some point I needed to throw him a Star Wars party. This year felt like the right year to do that…a little cheer that everyone could use. My nephews watched a few of the movies to prep and it was fun to see them get excited about the decorations and music.
Speaking of excited, have you ever seen an adult this thrilled about light saber shaped ice and giant balloons? He’s the most fun guy to do life with.
FOOD
Lunch consisted of burgers, chips, fruit, and a pasta salad. The pasta salad was super simple just bowtie pasta cooked, drained, and cooled mixed with cherry tomatoes, diced onion, fresh mozzarella pearls, a bottle of Italian dressing, and topped with freshly chopped basil.
Punny Names:
Han Burgers: Hamburgers
Princess Lays: Potato Chips
May the fruit be with you: Fruit
Bow-ba Fett Pasta: Bowtie Pasta salad
Drinks: Yoda Soda (Green River), R2Tea2 (Iced Tea), Vaderade (Blue Gatorade)
DECORATIONS
I found most of my decorations from Amazon. I did a lot of internet searching trying to make sure that the party didn’t feel too “kiddish”, but also preserve the fun of the movies. I decided to lean into the “dark side” and went with a lot of black and white elements while mixing in decor with the movie characters on them. EX: for the table I did black and white striped plates for lunch and character plates for cookies/treats. The true sprinkle on the tabletop was the confetti on the table which my dear mother-in-law said that she has been finding around her house ever since.
To me, one of my favorites for any kind of party are balloons. I got a Darth Vader character ballon and figured I would pair them with circle shaped black ones for filler. $80 at Party City later (whoops, this is why you pay attention when you’re checking out) I had 10 GIANT balloons that took up a bunch of real estate. They made Doug and his nephews happy so $80, well worth it.
The pun filled food signs served as part of the decor as well. I downloaded the Star Wars iconic font for free and created the food signs/gift tags etc. using that font and a free background I found. As long as we are in printing world, I found these great blueprint looking prints. Cue me heading to Office Max and getting them printed as Engineering prints (aka big dogs for about $5 a piece). I used them for added decor as well as wrapping for Doug’s gift.
Which, if you’re looking for Star Wars themed gifts, there’s no shortage of merch from the movies. I got him a deck of cards as well as a pair of fun socks to keep the theme going. You can find the gifts as well as decor items I bought through the link below.
Doug is the best to surprise…he loves the little things and gets easily excited. He’s easy to love that’s for sure. Happy Birthday sweet boy, may the force be with you.
Sincerely,
Ashley
