Detroit Rooftop in a Buru Dress
BURU housecoats were made for romping around Detroit…
I enjoyed a quick trip to Detroit recently. A driveable 2ish hours from Grand Rapids, it’s an easy overnight or day trip. It’s an inspiring place. Given their comeback story, you feel like heart and hustle is naturally injected into the city’s DNA. There’s much to love about it which always makes me a bit defensive when people say it isn’t worth seeing. Way wrong.
On this trip, I made sure to pack one of my BURU housecoats. I have spoken about my love for this special brand a lot, but wanted to share a bit more about their story.
The company was founded by the effervescent Morgan Hutchinson. Her focus is really for busy mamas who need their clothing to be versatile (and easily washable), but also stylish. You can tell that versatility is important to the brand’s ethos. Many of the pieces can be styled in various ways and she often does sets out of the same fabric to make mixing/matching a breeze (think same print in a tank, long sleeve top, skirt, shorts etc.).
I’m not a mom yet, but find her entire approach inspiring. She’s bridging a gap for women who enjoy fashion, but don’t want it to be too fussy. The pieces are fun, unique, and whimsical. Another aspect that I love is her focus on sustainability and ethical manufacturing practices. She has a thriving micro-factory in LA where the pieces are created after gauging pre-orders. Amazing. They have quickly become one of my favorite, go-to brands.
One of their signature housecoats was perfect for my trip to the east side of the state. They’re a simple shift shape always with a touch of flair and tie at the top (AND POCKETS, PRAISE). This one is a pretty blue color with strands of metallic silver. They keep this shape/cut of dress and replace the fabric throughout the year. I have gotten so much use out of mine-they really are perfect no matter what you have going on in the day and transition smoothly from a day at work to a night on the town.
For this outfit, I paired the dress with one of my favorite coats of all time from Anthropologie. There’s hints of the same muted blue color in the embroidery so they made for a nice match. Of course a cream pair of Tory Burch Jessa’s completed the look.
I’ll leave you with a few suggestions:
Plan a trip to Detroit, it’s fantastic.
Go buy yourself some BURU! Their housecoats are a perfect place to start.
Follow along with them on Instagram! This is where they announce new collections, collaborations they’re doing, and Morgan does her legendary try on sessions showing multiple ways to style the pieces you purchase.
I hope you love them as much as I do!
Sincerely,
Ashley
